The weigh-in is the UFC’s pre-fight show designed for checking the fighters weight confirming their eligibility for the fight and doing the stared outs. Well nine out of ten weigh-ins and stare down go perfectly normal for the fighters. There’s always that live TV factor. Anything could happen. And while some of these don’t live up to that insane level. There are some bizarre ones in here. I’m Dee Wicked for Watch MMA and here’s Ten embarrassing UFC weigh-in moments.
Number 10 – Kelvin Gastelum
Heading into UFC 183, Kelvin Gastelum was set to take on Tyron Woodley and what was a fairly anticipated matchup, a fairly anticipated matchup that wouldn’t end up to be however. Tyron was all in line and prepared but Kelvin ended up not making weight. The welterweight division clash had Gaston punching in at 180 a whole 10 pounds over the limit. 180 Kelvin misses by ten pounds. Fighters accidentally allowing themselves to slip and pack on a few extra pounds isn’t too surprising, but managing to be 10 whole pounds overweight by the time the fight rolls around, it’s kind of impressive.
Number Nine – Ion Cutelaba
Early on in in Ion Cutelaba’s career he was looking to be bold and make a name for himself in the USC. He had no qualms pushing as much showmanship into his public appearances as possible. Whether or not they were always the most well-received of stunts. One of the hoaxes most interesting came during the weigh-in for his fight against Jonathan Wilson in which he took that Hulk nickname a little too far and showed up Foley painted head-to-toe in green. While he doesn’t come out in purple shorts as disappointing as that is, he does send respect to the other Hulkster by tearing her shirt clean off his body like Hulk Hogan whether you love this moment or thought it was kind of dopey you gotta admit it took some guts and probably an annoyingly long shower afterwards.
Number Eight – Dana White
Why not throw a fun little goof in the list. John Jones and Anthony Johnson are both incredible competitors inside the Octagon, but both also enjoy having some fun messing with people from time to time. One of these people would be Dana White in an instance making the two look like anything but fun lovers that are messing around. Bones and Rumble would charge at each other in aggression, surprising Dana and forcing him to jump in and try to end the incoming brawl. Much to his luck Jones and Johnson who immediately start to laugh it off giving Dana a funny moment of realization before he goes off-screen likely for something to alleviate that jilt of stress.
Number Seven – Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva
And here we’ve got one of the most unique, technically most progressive stare downs in all of UFC history. During the notorious feud between Silva and Weidman that saw Silva’s legs snapped and career changed forever. This weigh-in could have never prepared us for such a rivalry. Then king of the UFC Anderson Silva stepped up to bump foreheads and Chris did not back down. Weidman pushed forward too and since neither man wanted to budge there was a moment where they kind of sort of kissed Weidman played it off well afterwards and ended up dominating Silva across two fights. So it clearly didn’t bother him too much for the time.
Number Six – Tim Sylvia
There was once a time when Tim Sylvia was one of the most physically impressive fighters the UFC had signed. The man who once went 7 years constantly fighting and only picking up a pair of losses just wasn’t the same young fighter he was, come the new decade. And that was the last new decade by the way. Thankfully Sylvia realized his spot life and isn’t still trying to keep it up. Unfortunately he didn’t have that self-awareness back in 2010 when the far past his prime fighter was still trying to match up with the far superior athletes.
Number Five – Leonardo Leleco
UFC Fight Night 94 in the weigh in Leonardo Leleco decided he wanted to pull some tricks to get into the head of his opponent Antonio Carlos Jr. His grand idea for intimidating mind games was to get himself weighed in first, dip back to his side while Antonio gets weighed in and come back over for the stare down wearing the mask from The Scream movies. I really don’t know what Leo was going for here. There is nothing scary about imaginary movie serial killers when you’re preparing for an MMA fight against a man whose plan is to beat you until you can’t move anymore. Besides it wouldn’t have worked out anyway for Leonardo as he’d be submitted with just 14 seconds left in the fight by Carlos Jr.
Number Four – Conor McGregor
In this entry we actually have Conor McGregor making weight perfectly fine. That’s no big deal for McGregor and isn’t where the embarrassment lies. In fact it’s the result of making weight that’s the landing of Conor on this list. We all know McGregor prides himself on being able to jump between divisions and reign supreme across all of them the best that he can. Well when Conor jumps down to 145 for the featherweight division he honestly just doesn’t look like Conor McGregor anymore you can see the resemblance, but he’s so shrunken and sunken in the face he looks like he’s going hungry. McGregor actually kind of resembles the Joker with that cold dead eyes, when he screams during the way in which is only slightly terrifying.
Number Three – Yoel Romero
Yoel Romero also faced issues with trying to cut down and make weight after coming in a pound over his limit heading into UFC 225. Romero had two hours to shed down from 186 to 185 and he came really close to getting where he needed. Come end of his time limit Yoel was weighing in at 185.2 pounds still technically overweight and therefore out of contention. This clearly put a massive toll on the body of Yoel, who was later seen all over social media having to be carried out of the arena by his crew. Considering he hired trainers specifically designed to help you cut weight quickly before a fight who knows just how much stress he put his 41 year old body through to end up like that.
Number Two – Travis Lutter
According to Joe Rogan Travis Lutter holds the distinction for the world’s worst weight cut that he has ever seen. And he’s the omnipresent all-seeing Joe Rogan. So you know that this is gonna be a rough one. There’s a hardly ever enacted rule in MMA where if a title challenger fails to make weight for a title match the fight is changed to a non-title Travis Lutter is apparently one of if not the only man in UFC history to have this rule be enacted, as he challenged for Anderson Silva’s middleweight championship but be forced out of the titles contention after failing to make way twice at the weigh-in.
[Commentary]: Missing an opportunity of a lifetime is embarrassing and ultimately very disappointing for Travis Lutter.
And Number One – Max Holloway
UFC 218 helped prove that the actual weigh-in spot itself can be just as embarrassing as anything. Fighters will sometimes struggle making a certain weight and therefore have to not only work their ass off during the preparing weeks before a fight but often strip down all the way to shed the smallest numbers imaginable just to hit their sweet spot. Max Holloway was one of these competitors and had his embarrassing weigh-in moment come in the form of everyone getting a good look at what he’s packing. While he was stripped down all the way to nude two men were assigned to hold a towel up as a sort of censorship bar covering Holloway’s genitals from the media. The men appear either confused pulling a prank or both as they whipped the towel up for a fleeting second exposing the young man. From his facial reactions not sure if he’s full-on shocked or just doesn’t even care.
