SOLDIER MILLIONS

Anibal Milhais (1895-1970) ‘Soldier Millions’, describes as having been ‘worth a million men’. He was the most decorated Portuguese soldier of World War 1. During ‘Operation Georgette’, Milhais stood up alone with his machine gun and defeated two German assaults by laying down intense fire, leaving hundreds of Germans dead. He managed to cover the retreat of Portuguese and Scots despite coming under heavy attack himself. He fired in all directions and stayed at his post until he ran out of ammunition. Both the British observers present in the scene and the Belgian commander included his action in their reports.

LONE VIKING ON THE STAMFORD BRIDGE

In 1066, during the Vikings invasion into English lands, an epic last stand remained in history. At Stamford Bridge, a 15,000 English army was up against almost 9,000 Vikings. Only one nameless berserker all alone fortified at the bridge and took down more than 40 enemies, giving his fellow Vikings time to regroup. Holding a great axe, this anonymous Norse barbarian battled back the entire English army for over an hour. This one Viking was taken down after the Saxons sent a boat under the bridge and impaled him from underneath. The Vikings have lost, but the legend for that one Berserker still lives.

SAITO MUSASHIBO

Saito Musashibo Benkei was a massive warrior monk who served Minamoto no Yoshitsune and was known for being strong enough to pulverize your head by squeezing your face. Benkei accompanied Yoshitsune as an outlaw, until they were encircled in the castle of Koromogawa. As Yoshitsune retired to the inner keep of the castle to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) on his own, Benkei fought on at the bridge in front of the main gate to protect Yoshitsune. Realizing that any attempts of fighting Benkei would result in defeat, the opposing army just decided to shoot a bunch of arrows at him instead.
