The transcript below is from the video “Can You Break a Board With a 1 Inch Punch?” by Freddie’s Modern Kung Fu.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

So, we’re going to do something new and fun today. We got these boards right here that we’re going to try to break. Yellow is the easiest. Orange is the second easiest. And then this board right here is going to be the next level. And then comes the green. And then the real one-inch board and then the blue board. So, the blue board is supposed to represent the one-inch board but in a plastic form. But the blue board is actually harder to break than the real board, honestly. The real board is almost the same difficulty as the green.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

The difference that we’re doing today is we’re going to try to break the board with a one-inch punch and see how high…I don’t. So try to break the yellow and then the orange, then this one, and then the green, and then the real board, and then the blue board. And then if you could break the blue board, we’ll get the brown board, okay? So the technique behind it is technically not really a one-inch punch because we’re going to start like this from the fingers and then you’re going to come and you’re going to hit with your fist, these three knuckles as you come forward. That’s the technique that Bruce Lee was doing when he hit that guy far back. We’re going to do the same type of technique but with the boards. Who wants to try first?

Student:

I’ll try first.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

You’ll try first? Okay. The thing about it, you can’t cut back and hit it because if you cut back and hit then it turns to red. The punch, you want to basically come here and bam! Just go boom! Use your body and strike.

Student:

So, my fingertips are touching the board?

Sifu Freddie Lee:

Yes. Your fingertips but don’t like cut back like this and break it. Just go from this short distance. The yellow’s easy to break. You should be able to break this one. Oh, there you go. So, you broke the yellow. The next one after that was orange. See if you can break the orange. It takes some practice. There you go. Nice. And then after the orange, comes this one. Let’s see if you can break this one. Nice. Going down the line. All right after that, let’s try to break the green one. Okay. So, you can’t break it. Who else wants to try? All right…Let’s do the yellow. Yeah, you just come here and then come and then boom like that. Orange. Green. Oh, actually not that one. Oh boy. You just have to push through. There you go. See, just use your body weight to push through into it. Let’s have Dan, try. Yellow. Orange. Number four. Good. Green. Next. Yellow. Orange. Four.

Student:

Breathe out. That’s the secret.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

Yeah. Breathe out. Put your weight into it. There you go. Four and then green.

Student:

Be water, my friend.

Student:

Hips, legs.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

Yep.

Student:

Pull your weight.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

There you go. Orange.

Student:

C’mon young man, you got it.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

All right, hold the camera for Raya because Raya’s going to go. Yellow. Orange. Four. Green. All right, hold the camera. I’m going to try it out.

Student:

Tell us the secret.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

It’ll be my first time to try this so I don’t know if I can break it.

Student:

Let’s watch that body position.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

Yeah, I never do this before. I’m going to see if I can break it. I’ll try. So, if I don’t do it, it shows that’ I’m being real. There’s no camera. All of us headed to the south. You know what I’m saying? If I can’t do it, I can’t do it. Just shows this is real. This is hard. All right, let’s try this one. Let’s see if this is easier to do. The green one, I couldn’t do. Let’s see if we try this one. So, if this one breaks, then that green one is going to be harder than the real board. We’ll see what we’ll do here. So, that is easier than this green.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

So, people demo with that. That’s easier. Try to break through the green board with the one-inch punch, it’s not easy. You can’t…I mean, nobody in here could do it yet. We’ll see if anybody can do it eventually. This is one of my goals now. All right, so, what it teaches you, that I’m not Superman, none of us are. You know, we all have our limitations. So far, nobody could break this with the one-inch punch but that real board broke. And I think a lot of these people, some of these people could have broken that too. Do you guys want to try the real board? Each one of these boards costs $3.

Woman Student:

I got one at home.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

It’s just pine wood. Anyone else?

Student:

Go ahead.

Student:

That’s a big board.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

Yeah.

Woman Student:

Damn.

Student:

Is this ¾ inch or 1-inch?

Sifu Freddie Lee:

It’s supposed to be 1-inch but it’s, like, my dad says it looks more like ¾. When they sold it to me, they said 1-inch on the edge but we just want to mill down the ¾.

Student:

1-inch is the raw.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

Yeah, probably.

Man holding the camera:

I’ll try.

Sifu Freddie Lee:

Okay. Nice! Good job! So, there we have it. Some demo. One-inch punch. A couple of us broke with the board.
