The transcript below is from the video “Ever Wonder Why Bruce Lee Almost Killed Bob Baker?” by Goldenbell Training.

Goldenbell Training:

Bruce Lee and Bob Baker had an epic battle in the movie Fist of Fury when Chen Zhen fought the Russian strongman, Petrov, in the final act of the movie. In the fight, Chen Zhen has to tap into his Lost Track Skill, or Mizongyi, to defeat Petrov, and the fight is meant to parallel the challenge fights Chen Zhen’s Sifu, Huo Yuanjia, participated in against Western fighters. But something that’s even more interesting about this fight scene between Chen Zhen and Petrov is the story gaining steam online that the actors playing these characters, Bruce Lee and Bob Baker, some kind of real physical confrontation during an exhibition. And after hearing the story, I can’t help but ask the question as to why Bruce Lee almost killed Bob Baker?

Goldenbell Training:

What’s up y’all? My name is Prince and this is Goldenbell Training. I’m into fitness, training internal martial arts, and learning cool and interesting things about the little dragon himself, Bruce Lee. This video, I’m taking a look at another one of those Bruce Lee stories floating around the internet that sounds a little bit suspect. And this one, like many others, is coming from the Beerdy Bruce Lee Central YouTube channel.

Beerdy posted a video titled Bruce Lee almost kills Bob Baker with his deadly sidekick, where he goes into detail about this incident occurring between Bob Baker and Bruce Lee in Hong Kong after filming Fist of Fury together. Now according to Beerdy’s story, after filming Fist of Fury, Bob Baker becomes Bruce Lee’s student.

Goldenbell Training:

Now after the movie, Bob Baker and Bruce Lee became good friends and Bob Baker trained under Bruce Lee in the United States.

Bruce had to fly to Hong Kong to give an exhibition and he invited his new student Bob Baker to come along with him to help with the exhibition. At this point, Beerdy spends an entire minute of a three-minute video describing one of Bruce Lee’s kicks that sends Bob Baker, who he calls a super heavyweight, flying almost into the crowd and landing with his feet over his head.

Bob Baker is a super heavyweight. This is a big imposing guy, a big strong guy, okay.

Goldenbell Training:

After that Beerdy spends the remaining 30 seconds of the video filling up time talking about Bruce Lee’s amazing power in his sidekick. But I mean, well, we already know that Bruce Lee kicks like a mule based on the fact that he managed to send Bob Baker head over heels in their kinky demonstration. Now I mean this obviously happened because we have pictures of it with Bob Baker and Bruce Lee participating in that demonstration together. This isn’t like the majority of Beerdy’s Bruce Lee’s stories, where he takes a picture that he found somewhere online and it makes up some fake story that gullible people believe. So, I mean, if this really happened and what’s the problem here?

Well, the thing is anyone who knows a little bit about Bruce Lee knows that the details Beerdy is giving are all obviously wrong. He says that after making Fist of Fury, Bob Baker became Bruce Lee’s student. And at the end of this video, he says Bruce Lee and Bob Baker returned to America, where they trained together and remained friends for years and years.

Goldenbell Training:

And they traveled back to the United States and Bob Baker stayed the Bruce Lee student for years and years to come.

This is a demonstration for what I believe was TVB’s Enjoy Yourself Tonight show, where Bruce Lee appeared with his student, Bob Baker, to promote their movie Fist of Fury. Fist of Fury was released in March 1972, and Bruce Lee tragically passed away 16 months later. So I don’t understand how they would have been friends who trained together for years and years after this happened.

Goldenbell Training:

What really happened is Bruce and Bob probably gave a short interview to talk up the movie. Bruce mentioned that Bob is one of his students from California and he’s playing Petrov, a Russian strongman and Karate expert. He probably talked up the connection to Huo Yuanjia fighting Westerners in his challenge matches in Shanghai and that Bruce is playing Huo Yuanjia’s disciple, Chen Zhen. They then got on the floor to demonstrate Jeet Kune Do and give the audience an idea of what to expect when Bruce and Bob face off in the movie.

This just goes to show that Beerdy doesn’t know anything about Bruce Lee and he’s lying to his audience in every video that he makes. It wouldn’t be such a big deal except, he likes to insult real Bruce Lee historians like Bay Logan and he goes around calling himself the biggest Bruce Lee historian on the internet.

Goldenbell Training:

Now, if you’re wondering where he’s wrong, look, I’ve talked about Bob Baker and Bruce Lee’s history in at least two videos already. The most recent video was about the Bob Baker drug letters, where we learned that Bob Baker was Bruce Lee’s plug for not only cannabis but cocaine and acid as well. Bob Baker was one of Bruce Lee’s first students at his Oakland School and these guys go all the way back to Bruce Lee’s introduction to the California martial arts scene, when James Lee introduced Bruce Lee at Wally Jay’s Luau. It was at Wally Jay’s Luau where Bruce Lee made his big splash which resulted in him giving a demonstration at Ed Parker’s Long Beach International Karate Championships. That led to his eventual role as Kato in The Green Hornet and this would eventually lead to Bruce launching the Kung Fu craze of the 1970s.

Goldenbell Training:

Now, Wally Jay’s Luau in 1962, Bruce demonstrated his one-inch punch on Bob Baker, knocking him over a couch. And then he demonstrated the one-inch punch again on Bob Baker in the Long Beach International Karate Championships in 1964. As I previously mentioned, the letters that were recently sold by Bob Baker’s estate revealed that these two were extremely close as Bob Baker was not only Bruce Lee’s student dating back to around 1962, but his drug supplier and Bruce’s alibi when Bruce engaged in at least one extra marital affair. I’ve noticed the other Bruce Lee Channel shy away from the subject of Bruce Lee’s drug use and his affairs. And I mean, it’s not something that I care to spend much time talking about either, but the thing is, look, you can’t make videos about Bruce Lee’s funeral, or make videos claiming you’re the only person to know Bruce Lee’s real cause of death if you also can’t talk about is drug use or his affairs.

Goldenbell Training:

I mean, do you really think he died in Betty Ting Pei’s apartment because he was waiting on Raymond Chow and George Lazenby to show up to go over the Game of Death script? Even Betty Ting pay has come out and said that she was his side chick and that they were in a relationship. So the only business happening in that apartment related to the Game of Death script was possibly Betty Ting Pei taking some dictation from Bruce. But all joking aside, these channels like Beerdy – Bruce Lee Central and the Bruce Lee Real Fight channel are not doing any favors to honor Bruce Lee’s memory by telling these heavily embellished stories that make Bruce Lee look like some untouchable superhero.

I mean, Beerdy’s telling some story that sounds like something out of Dragon Ball, where Goku makes friends with the people he fights after he beats them up. Bruce’s time in Hong Kong is what he’s most remembered for. But if you actually listen to the people closest to Bruce, this was not a good time in his life, even if he did achieve his goals of being a leading man in a movie, directing a movie, becoming a movie producer, and starring in a Hollywood role. Bruce was very isolated and lonely and the only person from home who was close to him, besides his family, was this guy Bob Baker who made sure Bruce had access to women and drugs.

Goldenbell Training:

So I kind of wish that Bruce Lee had actually beaten the breaks off Bob Baker and ended their friendship before their friendship ended him. But that’s just how I feel about Bob Baker. That’s something you’ll never hear from Beerdy, who seems to tell stories from somewhere in the multiverse where Bruceploitation movies are real events that happen to the real Bruce Lee of that universe. It’s kind of like the story Beerdy told about how Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly were touring around America, beating up Karate teachers in their dojos, or this other time when Beerdy said that Bruce Lee had a fight with a guy named Julian Patrick in some karate tournament. It’s just more wild stories from the Beerdy verse about why you don’t want to mess with Bruce Lee.

But hey, if you don’t want people to mess with you, then keep training, remember to breathe and come back to see me on the next video.
