Belgian actor and retired martial artist Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg, known professionally as Jean-Claude Van Damme or JCVD, was born on 18 October, 1960 in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, Belgium. Best known for his role in acrobatic action movies, Van Damme has showcased his patented splits and acrobatic kicks in such movies as 1988’s Bloodsport or 1991’s Double Impact.

Attempting to break into the thriving martial-arts movie industry, Jean-Claude moved to Los Angeles, California, in the early 1980s to pursue his Hollywood dreams. He was featured in the 1986 martial-arts flick No Retreat, No Surrender, but his big break came after he displayed his ability to perform a jumping, 360-degree “helicopter kick” in low-budget film Bloodsport (1988).
Van Damme also followed with another successful starring role in Kickboxer the following year. Over the following decades, Van Damme filled the big screen in numerous action flicks and also co-starred in the 2012 ensemble film The Expendables 2 alongside Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and several others.

His father was an accountant and florist named Eugène Van Varenberg. JCVD’s mother is Eliana Van Varenbergh. He also has a sister named Veronique Van Varenberg. The action film star has maintained a strong relationship with his family through the years, despite living in different countries.
Van Damme has been married five times to four different women. The action star’s first marriage to Venenzualan born politician Maria Rodriquez lasted for 3 years before divorcing in 1984.
The following year, in 1985, Jean-Claude married Cynthia Derderian, but within a year their union ended on the rocks just as Jean-Claude started getting his first acting roles.
The actor wed Gladys Portuguese, an ex-bodybuilder, fitness competitor and actress on January, 1987. Together they have 2 children Christopher (born 1987) and Bianca Brigitte (born 1990). However, during the time Jean-Claude starred in the 1992 film “Universal Soldier,” news of an affair caused the end of his marriage to Gladys.
Jean-Claude’s fourth marriage to model and actress Darcy LaPier followed on February, 1994, followed by the birth of their son, Nicolas Van Varenberg in 1995. But two year after Nicolas’s birth, Darcy and Jean-Claude’s marriage ended as well. A messy divorce and a lagging career had him turn to drugs for relief, which ended with a cocaine addiction and a jail term.
Jean-Claude realized he had to turn his life around and began exercising to get cleaned up. He also remarried Gladys on June, 1999, who helped the actor get his life and career back on track.

Jean began martial arts at the age of ten with Karate and Kickboxing then earned his black belt in karate at 18. He started lifting weights to improve his physique, which eventually led to a Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title. At the age of 16, he took up ballet, which he studied for five years. According to Van Damme, ballet “is an art, but it’s also one of the most difficult sports. If you can survive a ballet workout, you can survive a workout in any other sport.” Later he took up both Taekwondo and Muay Thai.
The statue dedicated to JCVD was unveiled in Anderlecht, Belgium in 2012. Van Damme himself has been quoted as saying that the statue “represented the dream of a Brussels kid”. He ended his address at the site of the statue with the simple but inspirational message that “if you believe in something strongly enough, it can come true”.
