He experimented with different martial arts styles including Tai Chi. Later, he was sent to Beijing on a 4-year training program with the Beijing Wushu Team. By chance, it’s the same facility where Jet Li trained. This was where the two stars met each other for the first time. At age 16, Yen took up Taekwondo and earned a 6th degree black belt in the martial art. On his return to the United States, Yen was a multiple winner in many Wushu competitions. In fact, he’s a multiple time Wushu World Champion.

Jet Li Biography

Jet li is a rare guest on our channel but we’ll make sure to fix this today. Jet li is a Chinese-Singaporean born in Beijing, China, on April 26, 1963. He’s an actor, martial artist, director, film producer and author. Jet Li captured the hearts of many movie fans when he debuted in the 1994 movie Fist of Legend and the 2002 movie Zhang Yimou.

After losing his father at the young age of 2, he became interested in martial arts, especially Wushu. At the age of 8, Li’s talent in Wushu became obvious. He went on to join the Beijing Wushu Team and he was involved in the martial arts performance by the team at the All China Games trained by renowned Wushu coaches Li Junfeng and Wu Bin. Li sharpened his martial arts talents and became the national all-around champion from 1975 to 1979. He achieved this being only 12.

Over the years, Li has mastered several styles of Wushu including the Northern Longfist Style called Chángquán and the Tumbling Fist style known as Fānziquán. He’s also studied other styles including Supreme Ultimate Fist, Drunken Fist, Shape Intent Fist and the Praying Mantis Fist. Obviously, Li is a master of Wushu. Li has also mastered Wushu’s primary weapons including the Straight Sword or Jian, as it’s called. The Sanjiegun or Three Section Staff, Gùn and Dao, which is also called the Broadsword. Unfortunately for Li, he had to cut short his competitive career in Wushu at age 18 due to a severe knee injury. However, he went on to become the assistant coach of the Beijing Wushu Team for some years.

Li’s Wushu talent eventually brought him to the film industry. He began his acting career in Mainland China before moving to Hong Kong. Li made his film debut in the 1982 film Shaolin Temple and later starred in the Once Upon A Time in China series, where he performed the role of legendary Chinese folk hero master Wong Fei Hung. The Battle Begins

After covering both fighters’ biography slightly, let’s put them up against each other in a street fight. So, Jet li is a Wushu master. He was an all-around national champion for 5 years in a row and was a coach of the Beijing Wushu Team. But in a street fight, Li’s limitation to Wushu will not help him against a Donnie Yen. Donnie has mastered all of the martial arts styles there are to learn. Yen has a 6th degree black belt in Taekwondo, a black belt in Judo and a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Cap it off – He’s a multiple world Wushu tournament champion. That makes him a master in Jet li’s area of expertise but also skilled in other areas, unlike Li.

Li stands at 5’6″. At 58 years old, he weighs 66 kg. On the other hand, Yen, who’s also 58 years old, weighs 75 kg. We know they’re both advanced in age but Yen is obviously the more buffed up of the two just by physical appearance. And even at their age, Donnie seems to be in better physical shape. Li has been dealing with health issues for a while now including hyperthyroidism. With the combination of several martial arts techniques, Donnie Yen will be a difficult opponent for Li. Donnie Yen’s skill set is more suited to a street fight than Li’s. In fact, Li has been “revealing how difficult it can be to keep up with fast athletes”. Well, with Donnie, he’ll be facing a tornado. With Yen’s skill combination, he might be able to pull something out of the blue in a street fight. On the other hand, Li seems to be more methodical.

As you can judge by the flow of our analysis, we believe Donnie Yen would have the upper hand in a sparring match. Health is a major factor. But even if we disregard the health issues of Jet Li and his teenage trauma, let’s imagine a scenario in which both are at their peak. The difference of emphasis with which each approaches martial arts, brings us to Donnie Yen’s favor. First of all, he continued to explore and develop outside of the system he began with. Secondly, Jet Li’s preference for inner being and using Wushu as an art form to express himself is, while laudable, not necessarily the best for a final street fight match. As he notes in his essay, where were we, the athletes look like machines. They’re moving so fast. I can barely see what they’re doing and there’s no flavor. Wushu is not a speed race. It shouldn’t be like other sports where the quickest athlete wins.

KNSTV Sports Martial Arts:

So who wins? Let’s ask Quora users one user picks Donnie Yen for no other reason than he’s cuter than Jet li and is aging like a damn fine wine. Okay, this reason will do. Jokes aside, let’s answer the question. While Jet li has a point, the question we’re asking is basically, who would be the better machine. Sorry, guys. But this is an obvious win for Donnie Yen.
