Welcome back to NcCrullex YouTube channel. Let’s talk about kung fu versus karate. Which one is better? Well, karate developed from the more human low-hand styles of kung fu and in essence is a branch from a much larger tree. Kung Fu as a whole is much more capable as a system and has tons of smaller subsystems within it. Consider karate to be a college and kung fu to be a full-university with tons of colleges within it.

Karate, taekwondo, and a few martial arts tend to be more straightforward and linear in their application of techniques which makes them easier to learn at first and easier to get some proficiency earlier on. But this also becomes their downfall as the techniques become easier to interpret and combat in competition. So, an experienced fighter will be able to detect your techniques and counter more easily.

Kung Fu has many styles including animal styles: tiger, crane, mantis, leopard, snake, dragon, eagle, monkey, bear, chicken, ostrich, etc.; and drunken styles, human styles, plus internal arts like Hsing Yi, Pakua, also known as bagra, Taichi, pressure point fighting, wooden man training, locks and holds, sweeps and takedowns, iron bone training, Chaquan training, and much more. You end up with a huge array of techniques that are much more deceptive, fluid, and effective form various angles and systems that can be used to attack and defend against multiple opponents.

Kung Fu is a much more complete system as a whole. But not every kung fu school has the ability to teach it all. There are few. Most have just one or two styles they teach: IE Summer Mantis Schools that teach mantis and tai chi; others have White Crane schools that teach white crane kung fu and tai chi. You’ll notice many more schools teach tai chi as a supplement because tai chi helps any style as it teaches the art of yielding and striking with internal power which will help you no matter what style you learn. Now while kung fu is a much more complete system, the person that learns karate would have less techniques but will probably drill those few techniques much more often and therefore, learn well to be able to use them effectively in combat.

So, a karate practitioner can beat a kung fu guy just as easily as the other way around. It just really depends on the fighter. In kung fu, often the disciple is left to use their own judgement and choose their own favorite techniques and drill those techniques on their own. So, it’s really up to the individual fighters whether one will come out on top of the other in a sparring match or fight.

There are many kung fu practitioners who don’t spar as often. And without actual sparring experience, one cannot become that good at combat no matter which style you put in the effort. But if you are going to put in the effort, I would choose kung fu so you can continue to learn for a lifetime and still learn new styles and techniques and never get bored.
