American television personality and retired professional boxer Laila Amaria Ali was born on December 30, 1977 in Miami Beach, Florida. She is the daughter of the iconic boxer Muhammad Ali and his third wife. During her career from 1999 to 2007, from which she retired undefeated, she held the WBC, WIBA, IWBF and IBA female super middleweight titles, and the IWBF light heavyweight title. Ali is widely regarded by many within the sport as one of the greatest female boxers of all time.

Laila Ali is the eighth of her father’s 9 children. Her mother is Veronica Porché, Muhammad Ali’s third wife. She has an older sister, Hana, who is an author. Laila initially became a manicurist by the age of 16. After graduating from high school, she attended California Santa Monica College and earned a business degree. Before she started boxing professionally, she ran her own nail salon.

Ali married Johnny “Yahya” McClain on August 27, 2000. McClain became Ali’s manager and helped guide her career. In late 2005, Ali and McClain divorced and McClain quit managing Ali.

Laila started Boxing at the age of 18. Initially inspired by Christy Martin, she announced her intention to become a professional boxer in a “Good Morning America” interview. While her father was eventually supportive of her decision, he expressed concerns about her safety early on. In her debut match on October 8, 1999 against April Fowler, many journalists and fans attended, largely because she was Muhammad Ali’s daughter. Laila knocked Fowler out and claimed her first victory. Another win came against Shadina Pennybaker with a TKO. Eventually, Ali had won nine matches in a row. The helped her generate a considerable following, with many fans calling for a match against Jacqui Frazier-Lyde, the daughter of Joe Frazier.

In 2001, fans finally got their wish, and the two boxing daughters squared off. Ali won in a majority decision, although both women walked away with serious injuries. Ali then took a year off before returning in 2002 and later retained the IBA title, the WIBA and IWBF belts with a win over Valier Mahfood, a world champion.
Laila also knocked out her idol Christy Martin, as well as many other female boxers. Further victories and championships came in 2004 and 2005 but by 2006, Laila’s career had begun to slow down. She fought a few more fights before retiring from professional boxing in 2007. Laila Ali ended her career with a record of 24 wins, zero losses, and zero draws. Her 24 wins included 21 knockouts and three decisions. During her career, from which she retired undefeated, she held the WBC, WIBA, IWBF and IBA female super middleweight titles, and the IWBF light heavyweight title. Ali is widely regarded by many within the sport as one of the greatest female boxers of all time.

Outside of acting, Laila has enjoyed a successful entertainment career. She took on roles in television series, hosted numerous shows, appeared in films and voiced herself in an episode of “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?”. In 2007, Laila gained further prominence after competing in season four of “Dancing with the Stars.” Despite her having no dance experience Ali came in third place.
