Manny Pacquiao is an active political figure, having served as a Senator of the Philippines for many years. Among many sporting circles, Pacquiao is considered one of the best “pound for pound” boxers of all time. He is the only professional boxer to be named an eight-division world champion and has won linear championships in five different weight classes. His rise from abject poverty to the pinnacle of his sport was made even more remarkable by his life outside the ring. The charismatic “Pac-Man” was an idol and a unifying force in the Philippines, where his unprecedented popularity led to commercial endorsements, movies, television shows, CDs, and his image on a postage stamp.

Pacquiao left home and began Boxing at age 14 to survive, as it was something he knew that he was good at while living on the streets. He made his professional debut as a junior flyweight on January 22, 1995, at the age of 16. He later admitted that he put weights in his socks during weigh-ins so that he could compete. He won his first professional light flyweight fight against Edmund Ignacio. Pacquiao made history by being the first boxer ever to win world titles in eight weight divisions, having won twelve major world titles, as well as being the first boxer to win the lineal championship in five different weight classes.

He is also the first boxer in history to win major world titles in four of the original eight weight classes of boxing, also known as the “glamour divisions” (flyweight, featherweight, lightweight and welterweight), and the first boxer ever to become a four-decade world champion, winning world championships across four decades (1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s).

Pacquiao was long rated as the best active boxer in the world, pound for pound, by most sporting news and boxing websites, and is also the longest reigning top-ten active boxer on The Ring’s pound for pound list from November 2003 to April 2016. In 2020, Pacquiao topped the Ranker’s list of best boxers of the 21st century.

He followed this up by running for a different district in 2010, gaining success this time around. He won the seat and continues to be intimately involved with the politics of his home nation.

In addition to his career in sports and politics, Manny Pacquiao has also enjoyed a fruitful career in basketball and the entertainment industry. He joined the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) as the playing coach of the Kia Motors Basketball team, as well as owning some playing teams. Pacquiao appearances have been mostly limited to Filipino movies such as “Wapakman” and “Anak ng Kumander”, although he also appeared once on American TV series “Tosh.0”.
