Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh Choo-kheng was born on August 6, 1962 in Ipoh, Malaysia. She rose to fame in 1990s Hong Kong action films and is best known internationally for her roles in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and the Academy Award-winning martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). Yeoh was ranked by the film review-aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes as the greatest action heroine of all time in 2008 and was named multiple times by People magazine in their list of most beautiful people worldwide.

EARLY LIFE

Yeoh was born to a local ethnic Malaysian Chinese family of Hokkien and Cantonese ancestry. Her parents are Janet Yeoh and Yeoh Kian-teik, a lawyer and MCA politician, as well as the man behind the popular express bus service, Sri Maju.

Yeoh was keen on dance from an early age, beginning ballet at the age of 4. She moved with her parents to the United Kingdom at 15 years old and started to study at the UK’s Royal Academy of Dance, majoring in ballet. However, a spinal injury prevented her from becoming a professional ballet dancer, and she transferred her attention to choreography and other arts. She later received a BA degree in Creative Arts with a minor in Drama.

After a brief dance career, Yeoh won the Miss Malaysia beauty pageant title in her native country and the Miss Moomba beauty pageant title in Melbourne, Australia in 1983, at age 20. Her first on-camera work was a 1984 commercial with martial arts star Jackie Chan, which caught the attention of a fledgling Hong Kong film production company, D&B Films. Yeoh started her film career acting, relied on her dance discipline and her on-set trainers to prepare for her martial arts action scenes. Already with her third credit, Yes, Madam (1985), she was given a main role. She was credited as Michelle Khan in these earlier films, then later, Michelle Yeoh.

In 1988, she married wealthy D&B Films executive Dickson Poon and retired from acting. When she returned to acting, she became very popular to Chinese audiences and she became known to western audiences through her co-starring roles in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and in the phenomenally successful Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon aka Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ directed by Ang Lee. The film was an international success, and earned Yeoh a BAFTA 2000 nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Yeoh has appeared in many English, Mandarin and Cantonese language films. Her other works include Memoirs of a Geisha, Kung Fu Panda 2, Reign of Assassins and so on. She also starred in the American romantic comedy-drama film, Crazy Rich Asians, Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy and Last Christmas. Yeoh was cast as original character Ying Nan in the 2021’s Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. On television, Yeoh is known for her role in the Star Trek franchise as Philippa Georgiou in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Discovery from 2017 to 2020, and its untitled spin-off series, announced in 2019. The film review-aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes ranked her the greatest action heroine of all time in 2008. She was also included in the BBC’s 100 Women list of 2020.

Director Ang Lee revealed during an event for Crouching Tiger Hidden that Yeoh tore her anterior cruciate ligament during the filming of the stunts. It took her two months to get back on her feet, but when she reached to the set she could only do stationary stunts. Lee had to do a lot of tricks to keep the illusion alive. Yeoh was part of a documentary made in Vietnam by the Asian Injury Prevention Foundation. She’s heavily involved in animal welfare and works to save the South China Tiger. Michelle Yeoh was awarded as Commander of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia (PSM) – Tan Sri in 2013 and as Commander of the National Order of the Legion of Honour of France in 2017.
