Sylvester Stallone sat down for Variety’s cover story and discussed how he likes to stay out of politics despite being mislabeled a Republican for portraying patriotic characters like John Rambo and Rocky Balboa. He also touched on his former beef with fellow star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The transcript below is from the video “Sylvester Stallone on His Old Beef with Arnold Schwarzenegger” by Variety

What would you say that your biggest regret is in your career?

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

It’s Stop!  Or My Mom Will Shoot and you sit there and you go, “Okay, I was on drugs.  It had t be.  Someone put LSD in my toothpaste.  This can’t possibly have happened.”

(Scene from Stop!  Or My Mom Will Shoot movie – Estelle Getty)

“I just want you to know that young man next to you is my son.”

(Scene from Stop!  Or My Mom Will Shoot movie – Sylvester Stallone):

“Mom, stay out of this, okay.”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

I think I did it because I was trying to get back at Arnold.  I heard he was going to do it, so I said, “I’m going to do it.”  Then he went, “Ha, ha, ha…I tricked you.

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

This rivalry between you and Arnold Schwarzenegger, was that real?  Was that…

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

Oh man, it was authentic.  I came face-to-face with him the night of the Golden Globes and he’s at the table.  I’m going, “Who’s this big guy?”  And he goes, “Arnold Schwarzenegger, new talent of the year.”  I go, “Excuse me.”  So he’s gloating and gloating and gloating and then finally, it’s time for Rocky.  We’re not getting this category and then I lose Best Actor.  I’m going, “Jesus, this is a nightmare.”

I see him go like…and then finally it was Rocky Best Picture.  I managed to grab this giant bowl of flowers and heave it at his direction.  Oh yeah, it had lilies and tulips.  I’m telling you!  I went, “Okay, the gauntlet is down.  This began a 10-year battle royale.

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Wow!”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“I mean we couldn’t stand to be in the same galaxy.  Now we realized, we’re the same person!  It’s after awhile…”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Don’t tell me you’re friends?!”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“Great friends!”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“You are?!”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“Fantastic!”

(Scene from the Golden Globes – Sylvester Stallone)

“I can’t be as bad as you, really?!”

(Scene from the Golden Globes – Arnold Schwarzenegger)

“Trust me.”

(Scene from the Golden Globes – Sylvester Stallone)

“Trust me?”

(Scene from the Golden Globes – Arnold Schwarzenegger)

“Trust me.”

(Scene from the Golden Globes – Sylvester Stallone)

“You’re horrible.”

(Scene from the Golden Globes – Arnold Schwarzenegger)

“No, you’re worse than me.”

(Scene from the Golden Globes – Sylvester Stallone)

“No, I’m serious.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Obviously, Rocky was such an original idea.  Those kind of original stories have gotten lost for the most part, don’t you think?”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“Yeah, yeah, yeah like because to gamble, to forsake all sense of security – that’s crazy obviously in today’s…  Like investing your own money in a movie and go, “Argh…”  But in the 70s, I would have.  Before it was like a very visceral, emotional, and fly by the seat of your pants, “I have a hunch” kind of business.  Those days are gone.  Now, it’s very, very clinical, scientific, informative, and pragmatic to the point of just ad nauseam.  I remember when they were doing musicals and Julie Andrews, and then they started to die.  All these musicals were going.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Right.”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“Then you had Easy Rider and I’m going, “This is what you call a transition.”  You go from that doing Mary Poppins to bikers.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Right.”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“And, it was working because no one in their right mind would say, “Okay, we’re going to go from gigantic studio films to two guys on a bike with a handheld camera, and think it’s going to work.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Rocky has transcended the times, why is that?”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“Rocky was an insecure fighter ever.  I mean he just had no belief in him whatsoever and I think a lot of people feel that and they say, “Oh!”  They see the character in the film overcoming, and they’re sort of say, “You know, I could do that too.”  He can’t fly.  He’s not superhuman.  He bleeds.  I can relate to that.”

(Scene from the movie Rocky – Laurence Tureaud (Mr. T.), American actor, TV personality)

“Hit me.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“What is it in your long distinguished career that you haven’t done that you’d still like to do?”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“There’s a lot of personal things I’d like to have a redo but who doesn’t?!”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Right.”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“I think what I’m doing now is what I should have done a few years earlier, which is do an amalgamation of all my experiences, everything else and try to form a company where I can now mentor and oversee and be kind of like the clearing house for problems and say, “I did that.  Don’t do that,” and work it that way as opposed to just constantly performing.  I don’t think that’s in my blood.  If I never acted again, it’s okay.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“But you’re not saying that you’re done?”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“No, I’m not saying I’m done but it’s not a vital necessity.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Right.”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“I feel complete without it.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Right, right.”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“I’ve got daughters.  That takes up a lot, so there’s no ego left.  If you have three daughters, your ego is pretty well pounded into a BB.  There’s nothing…  So I can take anything.”

(Scene from the movie Rambo 5 – Sylvester Stallone)

“All these years I’ve kept my secrets, but the time has come to face my past.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Rambo 5 is coming out, right?”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“Yeah, I am so shocked that how good it turned out and I don’t say that very often because it was done under such duress, the duress being that you’ve lost the element of surprise.  It’s been 10 years later and you wonder, “Okay, people are going to buy into the geriatric Rambo.”  Ever since that, it’s turned out to be “Wow.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Is this your last Rambo?”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“You know I’ve said this since the second one, there’s no last.  Just take it out of the vocabulary and say, “Pew!  Gone!”  There’s no go and there is no last.  The word ‘last’ – gone!  This one was never supposed to happen.  I did the story for this maybe 10 years ago.”

Variety (YouTube Channel – Leading daily source of entertainment news and analysis, with access to the most influential events, innovative panel discussions, top film festivals and unmatched awards season coverage):

“Right.”

Sylvester Stallone (American actor, director, screenwriter, and producer):

“Then it’s gone through so many incarnations but finally, I’m the only non-Hispanic in the movie.  So it’s very real.”
