Korean martial arts have quite the story behind their origin. During the Imjin War 1592-1598, Chinese martial arts techniques were spread to Korea when Chinese armies sent aid to ward off Japanese invaders. The king of the Joseon Dynasty was so fascinated by Chinese martial arts that he ordered people in his court to study a Chinese martial arts manual written by a prominent Chinese military strategist. The techniques studied eventually evolved into Korean martial arts styles and Korean martial art manuals began to be published.

Taekwondo is the largest practiced martial arts that comes from the Korean history. Practiced more commonly than any other in the Korean culture, it has found its way into the mainstream and has made quite the name for itself. It is practiced almost everywhere in homes, the streets, MMA fighters take on the fighting style and incorporate it in their matches. It serves very well to those who truly take the time to learn and master the style as best they can.

Today, it has become a global sport that has gained an international reputation and is even seen within the Olympics. Talk about a worldwide reach. Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts that teaches more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind both together simultaneously. Since it was created in war, many governments and militaries teach this style of combat as part of basic training. It is just downright massively versatile.

But what is Taekkyeon? Well, this art form is quite overlooked at times and after this, you’ll start to wonder how can this not be as big as its big brother Taekwondo. Taekkyeon is a traditional Korean martial art that utilizes fluidity rhythmic and dance-like movements, all incorporated to strike or trip up an opponent. It’s like the ballet of the Korean martial arts. The graceful movements of a well-trained Taekkyeon performer are gentle and circular rather than straight and rigid but can explode with enormous flexibility and strength. Like its big brother, the feet play as important a role as the hands. Despite its gentle impression, Taekkyeon is an effective martial art highlighting a broad variety of offensive and defensive skills, employing all available fighting methods.

A skilled Taekkyeon practitioner can rapidly dominate an opponent but a true master knows how to make an opponent withdraw without incurring damage. But does it really stand up against someone who is well trained in the art of Taekwondo? Does it have the grounds to become or be seen as better than the art form that has become the main staple of the Korean martial arts? The answer: no.

However, there are some pros and cons to each of the fighting styles that could leave one to say exactly the opposite. Some people believe that because of the gracefulness and agility that Taekkyeon teaches you that it is far superior to the relatively in-your-face style of Taekwondo. It offers a different perspective on how a match-up could go. But when you just look at the way that Taekwondo can quickly change from a defensive fighting over into an offensive style, then you’ll see why Taekwondo takes home the win with this one.

Brutal TV:

Taekwondo has garnered so much attention in the world of martial arts that it is rapidly evolving. Of course, it stays true to its holistic balance of mind, body and spirit. But through time, the physical fighting actions have become more and more fierce. Combining new mixed martial arts within its form and incorporating even more other Korean martial arts, Taekwondo has been able to become a very coveted fighting style. If you found yourself cornered in a street fight and you only knew Taekkyeon, you still may have a great chance of protecting yourself. But those chances are much greater when you have the skill set brought on from Taekwondo training. The grappling, the maneuvers and the footwork involved just gives a person an upper hand.
