Fight Commentary Breakdowns (Rob Watt: 10+ years MMA training and Jerry Liu: journalist/comedian, 8+ years Kung Fu study, sporadic training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu):

This happened May 17, 2020, and it involved self-proclaimed Tai Chi Master Ma Bao Guo 马保国 and an MMA hobbyist. For those of you who’ve been following Chinese MMA news, this is the same Ma Bao Guo Tai Chi master that ran away from the Xu Xiaodong match in 2017. Three years later, Ma Baoguo tests his Tai Chi and Xingyi against a 50-year-old MMA hobbyist in an official match put on by Yan Wu Tang 16 fight promotion in Shandong. The match was not in a ring or a cage, but on what looks like the ground. Jerry and Rob cover the fight and also share with you the thoughts of Andy Pi, the father of BJJ and MMA in China. Let us know what you think about this. Should these matches keep going? Should these fight promoters be locked up? Do we need to be a little more cautious about putting on these matches?

Jerry Liu:

“Alright guys, Fight Commentary Breakdowns. I’m breaking martial arts news in China. Um, I wanted to give you some background before we see the actual match. Because this channel wants to talk about context.

This is Ma Baoguo. He’s one of the four Thai Chi masters of China that Xu Xiaodong has called out a lot. He is a Thai Chi and a Xingyi. So, he is apparently a master of two martial arts. This is a fake video he did back in the day, that Xu Xiaodong called out. Basically, he paid this MMA fighter named Peter Irving to kind of fake spar him and show that his Thai Chi is really good. So, this is what got Xu Xiaodong and Ma Baoguo to have a few showdowns. Like this is completely fake. And Peter Irvin later said, ‘Yeah, he told me just to like fake punch.’ But later on, he sold it on Chinese social media saying, ‘Look at me beating an MMA fighter.’ Peter Irvin thought they were just choreographing, and Ma Baoguo was selling this as, ‘I’m actually beating an MMA fighter.’

So, this is kind of the context of what set it off in 2017. So, then on June 26th of 2017, Ma Baoguo and Xu Xiaodong arranged a fight. And they were about to fight, when I think Ma Baoguo realized he wasn’t going to beat Xiaodong. Especially on this, wooden thing, he is going to get his brains smashed. So, his nephew called the cops, and then the cops came, basically to stop the fight. If you guys wanna watch that, we covered it on our channel too. So now, comes two years later…”

Rob Watt:

“That’s a huge age discrepancy.”

Jerry Liu:

“Huge age discrepancy. This guy is probably in his 60’s. And I was talking to Andy Pi, the guy who brought BJJ and MMA to China. And Andy Pi was saying, he’s not a fan of these matches, mainly because these old people can literally get killed by a KO.”

Rob Watt:

“Easily.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah, so, Andy’s criticism, and I agree with him, it’s kind of his criticism of Xu Xiaodong too, it’s that yes it’s cool to claw these frauds, but the problem is, if one of these guys actually dies, everything Andy did for 20 years, will be gone.”

Rob Watt:

“Just by the way he’s standing, he’s completely lost.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Yeah.”

Rob Watt:

“His body posture right now appears as though, ‘I’m somebody who’s a fish out of water’.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And he’s wearing those Thai Chi pyjamas too. So, um, he’s fighting just a hobbyist. This guy’s fight is probably my level. If not just a little bit better. Like he’s a hobbyist. And so, Ma Baoguo, I don’t know got him…”

Rob Watt:

“Kinda wonder how they get away with this?”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah, that’s exactly what Andy Pi was saying. Especially, look, they are fighting on the ground. It’s not in a ring. It’s not in a cage. Because, I assume Ma Baoguo, the Thai Chi master is saying you know, in the cage, in the ring, it interferes with my Thai Chi, it interferes with my kung fu.”

Rob Watt:

“Who put this on?”

Jerry Liu:

“Exactly, that’s what I don’t know. Uhm, it says, uh, (Speaks in Chinese) so we might have to do some research on that. So, look at Baoguo’s stance. It’s a right and a left and that’s it.”

Rob Watt:

“Wow!”

Jerry Liu:

“That’s it.”

Rob Watt:

“Wow! Are they calling it? Or they don’t call it?”

Jerry Liu:

“He thinks he’s okay.”

Rob Watt:

“Oh! He’s stumbling backwards…”

Jerry Liu:

“This is…what kind of stance is that? No! Like that’s it. That’s it. Wow! They are actually letting it continue. Look at him.”

Rob Watt:

“At least, he’s head is not hitting the ground.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah.”

Rob Watt:

“Oh God!”

Jerry Liu:

“Oof! Oof! That was a…there. That was a cool…there.”

Rob Watt:

“Ai! God!”

Jerry Liu:

“I love how both of us were saying, yeah, at least his head is not hitting the ground. And then that happened.”

Rob Watt:

“Man! I can’t believe they allowed this to happen.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. So…”

Rob Watt:

“He could have a stroke.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. He could have a stroke. I mean look at this. Look at this…Wow! Look like he’s still on the ground till the end man! And you know Ma Baoguo is okay, okay guys. I just want to make it clear. He was okay after this. But, you know, he’s old. So, it took him a little longer. So, this is just another angle of the match. And, I don’t know what he’s saying to…”

Rob Watt:

“Did you see that they’re trying to put on Thai…all over…”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah I saw that. I saw it. So, Ma Baoguo is getting some water. So, this is some like the ‘Behind the Scenes’. Ah, (Speaks in Chinese), let me look at this. So, this took place in…I think…here they go again. I just…I think the first thing is…”

Rob Watt:

“He walked right into…”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Right into a punch man! Right into a jab. Like, I…and here’s what I think. Why he did that. In Xingyi, Xingyi has angles right. But Xingyi is a very linear type of kung fu. So, maybe he was trying to do a Xingyi attack and walked straight into a jab.”

Rob Watt:

“There is something to stepping on the outside of your opponent’s foot or stepping on your opponent’s foot. But you don’t disregard your entire face.”

Jerry Liu:

“Exactly. Exactly. And people who’ve never fought people like in this context would do this, right? Because they don’t understand how much it dazes you to get hit in the face.”

Rob Watt:

“Right. I can’t imagine it being worse, any sort of like pay-day. You know what I mean?”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Look at how…I mean that’s already a whiplash right there. Look at that. Just because he has adrenaline, he doesn’t realize like, even this, he’s going to feel it for at least six months. So, but you know, he’s got adrenaline, he’s got ego. So, like you said, this time he fell, he didn’t smack his head. But it was still a whiplash fall.”

Rob Watt:

“So, what’s his art?”

Jerry Liu:

“Um, Thai Chi and Xingyi.”

Rob Watt:

“Thai Chi.”

Jerry Liu:

“Xingyi is like a linear form of kung fu. So, that was the first time and then the second time. See he still seems like he’s okay.”

Rob Watt:

“He’s got a very interesting and unique walk.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Yeah.”

Rob Watt:

“It’s…He’s…”

Jerry Liu:

“Oof!”

Rob Watt:

“He’s so off balance.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. And notice the MMA hobbyist is without shoes of course and this is it. Oof! Oh, my goodness. And he is wearing shoes. So, he was allowed to wear shoes. Andy Pi sent us another angle. So, this was another angle that Andy Pi sent us. Apparently, this has been going viral all-over Chinese media. And that makes Andy Pi really uncomfortable because again, he’s afraid that MMA is just going to get banned by the Chinese government if this keeps happening.”

Rob Watt:

“Wow!”

Jerry Liu:

“So, this is, I never even thought about this until…so this is from the other side. Urgh! Yeah. Man!”

Rob Watt:

“You see the arms stiffen up.”

Jerry Liu:

“So, it looks like he got knocked out before he even hit the ground. It’s like he literally lost consciousness and then he added an extra…”

Rob Watt:

“Yeah. He went rigid. Like a board.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. So, I was looking up information of (Speaks in Chinese) and I just couldn’t find anything man.”

Rob Watt:

“You can scan that…is that a code at the bottom there? (Laughs)”

Jerry Liu:

“You’re right. That is a code. So, let’s scan that code and see what happens. (Speaks in Chinese) Let’s see. Right there. Right there. Come on. Scan the code. Please scan, scan, scan. Usually it works but I guess this code isn’t big enough. It took place in (Speaks Chinese). It took place, May 17th which is today. This literally happened today.”

Rob Watt:

“Wait…what?”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah this happened today…”

Rob Watt:

“It happened today?”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah this happened today.”

Rob Watt:

“Well I guess technically yesterday…”

Jerry Liu:

“Yesterday in China. Yeah. So, this literally happened… (Speak sin Chinese) So, uhm, yeah. I don’t see any like news reports. We can probably search on Chinese social media. See what we get. Uhm…let’s se Ma Baoguo.”

Rob Watt:

“Big shout out to DuckDuckGo.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah big shout out to DuckDuckGo. Unfortunately, we’ll have to go on to Chinese social media. But, uh, so let’s…this is one of China’s version of Google. So, this is called ‘Sohu’.”

Rob Watt:

“Sohu?”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah it means, ‘Searching Fox’.”

Rob Watt:

“So, the searching fox.”

Jerry Liu:

“Oh, so he’s 50…oh no, no, no. The guy who fought Mao Baoguo is 50.”

Rob Watt:

“Wow!”

Jerry Liu:

“So, it was a fight that could have ended badly for both sides.”

Rob Watt:

“Yeah…argh!”

Jerry Liu:

“The Thai Chi master was 69 years old.”

Rob Watt:

“Oh, my God! 69? You could tell he was up there.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. So, that’s…”

Rob Watt:

“That’s so irresponsible.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. I agree. I agree. It just…it’s not…I’m not…and that’s why Andy sent this. I woke up seeing Andy’s messages. Andy is like, ‘Jerry if you are going to report it, please don’t laugh about it. Please don’t talk about it the way you used to talk about it. Which is almost like amusement.’ And I get why he was so concerned. Man! I’m just trying to, like you said, I want to see if he’s okay. Um, this is the most recent one. 3 hours ago. So, this is of course the guy, right? We saw him already.”

Rob Watt:

“He’s got good hair.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah he does have good hair for 60 years old. I guess that’s what Thai Chi does. It makes you more healthy. But don’t think of it as a way to be able to you know, learn how to fight. So, uhm, (Speaks Chinese) I think it’s the guy he fought. I don’t know if it is. Uhm, Ma Baoguo. Yeah, I think the guy…the guy he fought, this guy is a guy who, uhm, he’s been some kind of like uniformed officer before. So, he’s done MMA, he’s done Sanda, and he’s just a hobbyist you know. Man! This is…so, it looks like there’s a dispute of his age. This says Thai Chi master is 68. Then there was another news source that said he was 70. So, he’s up there, that’s all we know. And then…”

Rob Watt:

“He’s just added 7 years to his life.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah.”

Rob Watt:

“Or knocked him off. Knocked out 7 years.”

Jerry Liu:

“Exactly He might have to train twice as hard in Thai Chi for the rest of his life to get those 7 years back.”

Rob Watt:

“Yeah.”

Jerry Liu:

“I mean, I’m not kidding about that. I know it sounds like a joke, but Thai Chi is really good for your body, man! Just, don’t think you can fight after you do Thai Chi. I’ve never seen anything like…”

Rob Watt:

“Get the circulation going.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah get the circulation going. Exactly. It’s a full body circulation. Oh, this is a different Ma Baoguo. So, here’s a news article about Ma Baoguo making fun of Zhang Weili, the Chinese MMA fighter.”

Rob Watt:

“Ah, wow!”

Jerry Liu:

“So, I don’t know what he said but yeah looks like this guy likes to stir off stuff. This was right after Zhang Weili’s fight. Or maybe right before. And, uhm, I just don’t know what this guy’s deal is. He already ran away from the Xu Xiaodong fight in 2017.”

Rob Watt:

“Forget who he is. I mean that would have ended just as poorly.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Probably even worse cause Xu Xiaodong outweighs him, a lot more than that MMA hobbyist.”

Rob Watt:

“Yeah.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. I see, so he’s criticizing Zhang Weili for saying she’s not really using too much kung fu in her fighting. That’s what she’s saying. So, I, you know, (Speaks in Chinese). ‘Zhang Weili’s fight IQ is not good.’(Laughs) Really? Are you going to criticize her? (Laughs) Yeah so, guys that’s it man. We’ll check up on Ma Baoguo. He’s okay, I know he’s okay I just don’t know where he is now, or he doesn’t even know where he is now. Like, Rob says.

Jerry Liu:

Irresponsible man. Irresponsible of Chinese promotions and by covering it I wanna make sure to emphasize, because in the past, we didn’t know as much about all this, and so, we all came at it as more of like an academic/amusement point of view. But now that we’re seeing the actual ages of this stuff and we’re seeing…I mean there’s always a ref that is good but according to like the kung fu guys requirement, it was not on a padded surface man. That is just…I fell once on wood and I smacked my head and I had a little mild concussion. But you know, that messed me up in college. I couldn’t spell well sometimes. So, and I probably still, when I’m typing, I still mess up sometimes. I don’t even notice I messed up. Probably I still have some brain damage. So…”

Rob Watt:

“Yeah that stuff was a scary KO.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah.”

Rob Watt:

“I really hope he’s okay. I hope it’s not like some sort of Cobra propaganda thing.”

Jerry Liu:

“Yeah. Yeah. Guys I’ll keep you updated. I don’t know where Ma Baoguo is, but you know Andy Pi says Ma Baoguo is okay. But again, the promoters should be in jail. That’s what Andy Pi says.”

Rob Watt:

“Yeah.”

Jerry Liu:

“The promoter should be in jail. I hope this teaches a lesson to all wanna-be promoters. Stay out of the MMA business or the fight business in general. Unless you are prepared to run real fights and not circus acts. That’s what Andy Pi says. And I agree with him. Because as funny and as amusing this is, the Chinese government is just looking, looking for reasons to shut this down. I just know. The Chinese government is looking for reason to shut this down. And this will give them ample reason if something happens. So, just my thought. Let us know what you think.”

Rob Watt:

“Fight Commentary Breakdown.”

Jerry Liu:

“That’s right. Jerry and Rob.”
