After over 150 movies, there’s no doubt that Jackie Chan has cemented himself as a kung fu legend. This is the story of how he went from a child of war refugees to an international superstar. 🥋

Jackie Chan:

Every day on set, I risk my life, I risk all my energy to make every single day. I’m not for the award, 56 years later, people know what I’m doing because I believe myself. I state with what I’m doing, one day, I’m going to succeed.

An actor, director, kung fu master and icon. Chan Kong-sang was born in Hong Kong on April 7, 1954 t parent who were Chinese Civil War refugees. At 7, he began studying martial arts, drama, acrobatics, and singing at the Hong Kong Peking Opera School. He appeared in his first film at 8.

Jackie Chan:

When I was young, I don’t have a perfect education. So, this is why, around the world, I’m helping children, especially in China. I built 27 schools. It’s all about children because children is every country’s future.

Brut India:

After graduating in 1971, he worked as an acrobat and stuntman. Eventually, working with Bruce Lee on the film Fist of Fury, where he completed the highest fall in Chinese film history. He adopted the name Jackie from a construction worker that took him under his wing while he’s in college. In the early 1970s, Chan began to feature more prominently in Hong Kong cinema- cultivating his unique persona that combines extensive fight scenes, death-defying stunts and slapstick physical comedy.

When you turn off my dialogue, you know the whole story. That’s my secret. That’s my philosophy. You don’t have to listen what I’m speaking. What’s the story? You turn off the music, you turn off the dialogue, the audience see the silent film, then you know the whole story.

His Kung Fu comedies made him the highest paid actor in Hong Kong cinema- but he didn’t break into Hollywood until 1996’s Rumble in the Bronx.

Jackie Chan:

Every actor or actress wants to come to Hollywood- now I know why.

Soon, commercial hits like Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon propelled him to global stardom.

Jackie Chan:

When I talk about movies, I just get so excited- there’s so many stories. I’ve been making films for 53 years, you know, all my life in film. When I look at this, “How can I do a stunt?” When I look at this, “How to come up with the story?” “What’s that comedy?” Everything in mind always keep, keep, keep, keep.

Brut India:

In addition to movies, Chan is a trained vocalist. He’s released 20 albums since 1984. (Plays video clip of Chan singing)

He has also served as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2004 and has campaigned for wildlife conservation, disaster relief efforts and better pay for stunt coordinators.

Jackie Chan:

The reason why I established the Action Film Week and Stuntmen Association is to let the industry pay more attention to all the problems the stuntmen are facing, including their insurance and industrial standards. There’s still a log way to go.

He has also courted controversy, speaking out against Hong Kong protesters during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and stating the United States is the most corrupt country in the world

Jackie Chan:

I think that there’s no one out there, me or you, who wishes bad things for Hong Kong. We all just want the best for Hong Kong. If you don’t agree with my opinion, I respect that. However, you need to respect my opinion as well. Everyone is entitled to freedom of speech.

With a net worth of over $350 million, and feature roles in over 150 movies, Chan has cemented his status as one of cinema’s greats.
