Can you imagine that more than 10 years have passed since The Karate Kid was released?
In this video, I’m going to show you how the actors in the famous film have changed over time. And also, I will tell you a few facts about them. Enjoy!
Jackie Chan as Mr. Han
The producers were very lucky to have Jackie in the film. He was so highly revered in his native China that his Smurf presence in the country opened doors for the production of The Karate Kid in ways nobody else possibly could. Chan’s inclusion in the film prompted the Chinese government to allow filming in the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and the Wooded Mountains. Now, he is 66 years old.
Taraji P. Henson as Sherry Parker
In summertime, Taraji took her son to China on the set to show him the whole process of filming The Karate Kid. During all the [inaudible] filming she also became Jaden Smith’s real mother in a weird way and became a very close friend to the Smith family. She is 50 years old now.
Jaden Smith as Dre Parker
For the role of a 12-year-old Kung Fu student, Jaden spent 3 months training in various martial arts techniques. According to him, he became significantly better, in every sense of the word, after filming in this movie. Since he is the son of Will Smith, no one even tried to somehow say a word to him for some pranks that he did on the set because it could have cost the staff their job. Jaden has also become a very good friend with Justin Bieber with whom they have recorded a song “Never Say Never” for the movie. They are still good friends. Now, Jaden is 22 years old.
Wenwen Han as Meiying
In the moment where she kissed Jaden, she was very nervous and shy. For a good take, they had to kiss for about 20 seconds and more than 20 takes were made. In China, the kissing scene was cut completely. Wenwen Han is now 25 years old.
Luke Carberry as Harry
When he was 5, his family moved to China, where he learned Chinese and was able to communicate fluently. When Luke turned 14, the director of the film The Karate Kid noticed him and offered a small role. Luke was very excited and agreed for it. Filming lasted until October and he needed to study but Luke wasn’t worried. He brought his homework, notepads and books on the set and didn’t miss any homework or tests. He is now 24 years old.
Zhenwei Wang as Cheng
Since age 4, Zhenwei has been practicing Wushu and he has reached professional results in it. He received many awards in national competitions at young age. In July 2009, The Karate Kid began looking for cast members. About 10,000 people came to audition. The selection was extremely strict; English and Mandarin, Chinese fluency, Wushu skills, physical appearance, acting, facial expressions and even cultural overall expressions were tested. After 3 months of auditions, Zhenwei Wang overcame all difficulties and got the role. It’s like he’s been preparing for the role his whole life. When filming The Karate Kid, Zhenwei suffered a head injury requiring 4 stitches. He received it while chasing Jaden after being splashed by the dirty water. Zhenwei hit his head on a huge trash can. He is 25 years old now.
Yu Rongguang as Master Li
In addition to his acting career, he’s been doing martial arts his whole life. Yu turned his super training into an impressive martial arts film career. Even though he looked like an unpleasant and unfriendly man in the film, he was actually very kind behind the scenes. That’s what he called acting. Now, he is 62 years old.
That’s all for now. Hope you liked this video, subscribe and stay tuned.
