Fight Commentary Breakdowns (Rob Watt: 10+ years MMA training and Jerry Liu: journalist/comedian, 8+ years Kung Fu study, sporadic training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ):
Rob and Jerry analyze the Wing Chun used in a ring match against a kickboxer. This is from Taiwan, courtesy of Wing Chun fighter Qi La La. He is a Wing Chun fighter who uses his Kung Fu and pressure tests his abilities. In this video, we watch him use Wing Chun against another Taiwanese kickboxer. Very cool and worthy of commentary and critique. Enjoy this commentary, and like always, please give us your comments and thoughts!

The transcript below is from the video “Wing Chun vs Kickboxing – Wing Chun Wins Match” by Fight Commentary Breakdowns.

Jerry Liu
“Fight Commentary Breakdowns, Rob this is Taiwanese MMA and there’s a Wing Chun guy, almost said Yung Chun. There’s a Wing Chun guy, Yung Chun could be a style too but Wing Chun guy named Qi La La, which is a really stereotypical Taiwanese name. Taiwan got influenced by Japan a lot.”
Rob Watt
“Okay.”
Jerry Liu
“So they’re kind of Kawaii sometimes. Like nobody in mainland China would call themselves Qi La La, you’d get made fun of.”
Rob Watt
“They look like they might be like maybe either 155 or 170.”
Jerry Liu
“I see. I think he said 56 kilograms.”
Rob Watt
“Okay.”
Jerry Liu
“That’s, dude that’s pretty light then. I might have misheard… 56 kilograms. Ah no, anyways, here they go! So our Wing Chun guy is the guy, I believe he’s the guy with the weird white hair.”
Rob Watt
“Okay.”

Jerry Liu
“Very Kawaii Japanese hair.”
Rob Watt
“Okay. Ooh, good low kick”
Jerry Liu
“Saw that.”
Rob Watt
“That was really solid.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep.”
Rob Watt
“Oh interesting stance he’s got there, low hands.”
Jerry Liu
“Yeah, the Wing Chun guy is definitely the guy in white.”
Rob Watt
“Yeah.”
Jerry Liu
“Yeah.”
Rob Watt
“Ooh, got clipped over the top left shoulder!”
Jerry Liu
“Oh, did you see that?!”

Rob Watt
“Oh, you got to put that hand up!”
Jerry Liu
“Yep!”
Rob Watt
“Now, he’s starting to figure it out a bit but his hands are low again.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep, yep!”
Rob Watt
“He’s going to get that lead hook.”
Jerry Liu
“Lock in, oh okay. Oh white-haired guy did the low kickback.”
Rob Watt
“Mm-hmm, the guy in the black shirt knows his lead hook is landing.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep, yep.”
Rob Watt
“He’s just waiting for the guy to drop his hands.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep. It’s interesting how this guy’s adapted Wing Chun pretty well.”
Rob Watt
“Yeah…”

Jerry Liu
“It’s interesting.”
Rob Watt
“The only problem is, is he’s not bringing his hand back to protect his hand.
Jerry Liu
“Yeah, noticed that too and maybe that’s a bad side effect of his Wing Chun training.”
Rob Watt
“Yeah.”
Jerry Liu
“But and he’s doing Wing Chun with gloves, so it possible to do Wing Chun with gloves.”
Rob Watt
“Yeah, black shirt has these…
Jerry Liu and Rob Watt
“Oooh…!!”
Jerry Liu
“Oh, okay!”
Rob Watt
“He got hit with his own medicine.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep! Wow!”
Rob Watt
“Yeah, black shirt guy was doing some big looping punches and the Wing Chun guy adapted and said, “I’m going to use it.”

Jerry Liu
“Yep.”
Rob Watt
“That’s exactly the punch that he got cut with.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep. Wow!! Yeah. Dude, this is interesting and the Wing Chun guy actually blocked a few times too, I just realized! Like he actually and that’s where you said. Wow!”
Rob Watt
“Big looping punch.”
Jerry Liu
“Boom, right there! He was kind of like doing more… It wasn’t exactly a hook. It was more Kung Fu style type of…”
Rob Watt
“Yeah, they use this type of punch. These looping punches, they use a lot in combat Sambo.”
Jerry Liu
“Ah, makes sense.”
Rob Watt
“Because if you miss, sometimes you can go directly into a Judo throw or a Sambo throw.”
Jerry Liu
“Interesting. Oh, they gave it to the Wing Chun guy. Okay, wow! Alright, not what I expected but…”
Rob Watt
“Deep bomb.”

Jerry Liu
“Deep bomb. So, Taiwanese, very typical of Taiwan. Look at the girls, no booty. Nothing! Hey, I got no booty too, so who am I to say?”
Rob Watt
“Monster Energy.”
Jerry Liu
“Monster Energy! I guess they are drunk in Taiwan, too. So that was interesting, man! As we can see, a lot of times the Wing Chun guy stepped into the ring and becomes boxing bling. He managed to maintain some of his cool Wing Chun kind of strikes and all that.”
Rob Watt
“Yeah. Yeah, in the very beginning of the round, you could tell… See how low his hands are?”
Jerry Liu
“Yeah.”
Rob Watt
“You can tell he was getting lit up by those big looping lead hooks. Then he adapted in the middle of the round and then caught the black shirt guy with his own medicine.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep! That was great!”
Rob Watt
“That was fantastic.”
Jerry Liu
“He started out very strong with that kick.”
Rob Watt
“Yeah. Yeah, that was a good kick.”

Jerry Liu
“But like you said, look at his hands man!”
Rob Watt
“Yes, so…”
Jerry Liu
“Asking to get hooked!”
Rob Watt
“Yeah.
Jerry Liu
“And he throws good fight kicks, too.”
Rob Watt
“These guys are both very fast.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep. I don’t think clinching was allowed but I think if clinching were allowed, I have a feeling this boxer would have done better; if he had some Thai boxing training or whatever.”
Rob WattÂ
“Yeah, his chin was really high. Black shirt’s chin was very high as he was striking.”
Jerry Liu
“True. Stuck out I noticed. Look, it’s almost like a natural habit. I noticed sometimes I do that, too.  Like sometimes even when I train Jiu-Jitsu, like my chin’s sticking out.”
Rob Watt
“Pretty much, I mean you really don’t want to be doing these extended combos because unless you’re moving, unless you’re pivoting off and finding angles. Like you’re just standing right in front of them trying to throw combos…”

Jerry Liu
“Yeah.”
Rob Watt
“… ,you’re going to get lit up with a counter.”
Jerry Liu
“Exactly.”
Rob Watt
“Like that.”
Jerry Liu
“And like that.”
Rob Watt
“So like if he had delivered that hook and then ducked under, he would have been fine.”
Jerry Liu
“Yep.”
Rob Watt
“But he just stood right there for the counter.”
Jerry Liu
“Exactly, I’m going to slow that down because I think we actually saw a lot of Wing Chun in that. So, yeah that was… Okay, alright. I do like how he’s striking. He’s striking a lot with the palm area. He’s not quite using his fists as much. So he’s really staying true to a lot of his Kung Fu moves. It’s like a better version of the 1954 fight we saw back in the day.”
Rob Watt
“Oh gosh, yeah.”
Jerry Liu
“But because they were trying to hit with that palm area too…”

Rob Watt
“Yeah.”
Jerry Liu
“… but it just looked so amateur.”
Rob Watt
“Yeah.”
Jerry Liu
“Wow!”
Rob Watt
“Try not to break those hands.”
Jerry Liu
“Exactly, so courtesy of WOTD, almost sounds like the World Trade Organization and oh, this is actually his channel. This is Qi La La, the Wing Chun fighter’s channel. If you see this Qi La La, I’m sure you can kick my butt but this Kawaii type of naming is like very, very indicative that you’re Taiwanese. Notice I said Taiwanese. All my mainland audience, I know you’ll get mad at me for saying that but as of right now, it’s his own little thing so.”
Rob Watt
“Jerry is so controversial.”
Jerry Liu
“I know, getting controversial here but this is Qi La La. Go follow him. Qi means strange, La La is just like generically Japanese-type of Kawaii thing to say. Guys leave your comments below! Fight Commentary Breakdowns out!”
Rob Watt
“Peace.”
