The transcript below is from the video “UFC Fighters With Kung Fu Background“ by Chris Visions.

Welcome back to NcCrullex YouTube channel. In UFC, you have striking and grappling. Being a pure striker is not good enough. You can easily be taken down to the ground. This is true for all striking disciplines. Whether you train in boxing, kickboxing, taekwondo, or karate. Most kung fu practitioners use old training methods and don’t do full contact sparring. There are, however, some mixed martial artists who do full contact sparring and fighting whose base discipline is kung fu. There are three UFC fighters with a kung fu background.

Chris Visions (NcCrullex Dedicated To All Different Types Of Martial Arts):
Cung Lee. Cung Lee trained in kung fu and taekwondo at a Vietnamese school at the age of ten, wrestled in high school and college, and completed san shou, a Chinese combat sport where you engage in kickboxing and awarded points for throws. Cung Lee was undefeated in san shou with a professional record of 17-0 and won three bronze medals in the Wushu World Championships, won 6-0 in MMA, defeating Frank Shamrock with a Strikeforce Middle Weight Championship. He had an overall record in MMA of 9-3. Cung Lee’s fighting style includes a lot of flashy kicks common to kung fu styles. He has shown that traditional martial arts techniques can work in MMA when you combine them with standard MMA training.

Dan Hardy:
“Being called Nip, Guk, Chink, get beat up a lot…”
Dan Hardy’s Mother:
“One day, he come home with a black eyes, says, ‘Hey, mom, you asked me not to defend myself. Look at myself here. And at that point, I got so mad. So, we decided to go out and get kung fu lessons.”

Dan Hardy. Daniel Mark Hardy is an English former mixed martial arts artist who fought in the welterweight division during his professional MMA career, which began in 2004. Hardy fought in various promotions, such as Cage Force and Cage Warriors before signing a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championships, the UFC. Hardy’s initial education was in taekwondo and he later began competing at the age of seven. He then practiced other martial arts as a teenager which included karate, jiu jitsu, judo, and eventually, wushu, where he travelled to China to train with Shaolin monks for several months.

Dan Hardy:
“…because I would like to go to, like, a kung fu class, and you know, do the first forty minutes of the class. So then, people in the room would start to get an idea of, you know, well he kind of looks he knows what he’s doing, but it’s not kung fu. So then when sparring comes, everyone wants to try and take your head off and beat the new guy.”

Patrick Joseph Barry. Patrick Joseph Barry, born July the 7th, 1979. He’s a former American kickboxer and mixed martial artist who competed in the heavyweight division. He’s particularly known for his low kicks.
